I've never built a complete website. And I never plan to build a complete! If I ever claim a website is totally complete - then that website should instead be pronounced dead. Business owners in the process of building a website eagerly await the day when the site developer tells them the website is complete. There is usually a final review and approval process - and after that a Launch Phase. That's when most site developers call a website 'complete'. Tragically - that is also the time when most business owners stop working on their website altogether.

Who is looking at your website? And How does your website look? These are two very important questions to ask when planning to build a new website - or running an existing website that may need an overhaul. People are very judgemental. You know the phrase "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder" means that that something or someone is beautiful, depending on the person who is looking. But each of us has our own measure of beauty.
Another phrase that comes to mind is - "Never judges a book by it's cover" - but I always do! I can't help it! Someone in the publisher's marketing department spent sleepless nights pondering and planning to craft a cover that would not only draw my attention - but entice me to buy a book I had never seen before. Even when you strip away the glossy paper covers and you are left with the hard bound book - the font and color of the title covering the spine is meant to draw your eye. Someone wanted you to pull this book off the shelf before all the others sitting next to it. But of course the phrase still holds truth - I've bought plenty of books with snappy covers that end up being duds!

With an economy now in a tailspin, brick & mortar retailers - and even online retailers - will be watching the 2009 summer shopping season with eagle eyes. They will be watching closely for indications of declining consumer spending overall. However, retailers taking recent declines into consideration should still plan and position themselves for a profitable future.
Both brick & mortar, and online retailers, able to leverage online positioning can increase their profits. Those that take steps now to move ahead of competitors will find this an easier summer to weather than most. Traditional retailers may experience lower foot traffic from traditional tourism loads. But many are already finding that replacing tourists with locals not only sustains their business - but strengthens it for future dips in the market.
